Dysgraphia Accommodations for IEP & 504 Plans

Dysgraphia affects the physical act of writing, spelling, and organizing thoughts on paper. Accommodations let students show what they know through alternate means.

    Common school challenges

    • •Slow, illegible, or painful handwriting
    • •Spelling errors disproportionate to ability
    • •Trouble organizing thoughts in written form
    • •Hand fatigue and avoidance of writing tasks

    Evidence-based accommodations to request

    Assistive Technology

    • Speech-to-text / dictation software
Software that converts spoken words to written text for assignments.
    • Word prediction software
Software that suggests words while typing to support writing fluency.

    Reading & Writing Support

    • Scribe for written work
An adult writes down the student's dictated responses.
    • Reduced written output requirements
Fewer sentences or paragraphs required to demonstrate understanding.
    • Graphic organizers for writing
Visual templates to plan and structure written work.
    • Access to spell-check tools
Permission to use spell-check software on written work.

    Time & Pacing

    • Extended time on in-class assignments
Additional time to complete written work and projects.
    • Extended time on tests and quizzes
Typically 1.5× or 2× the standard time limit.

    Testing & Assessment

    • No grade penalty for spelling errors
Spelling errors on non-spelling assignments do not affect grades.
    • Option for oral testing
Allowed to demonstrate knowledge verbally instead of in writing.

    Organization & Materials

    • Copy of teacher's notes provided
Pre-printed or photocopied notes so the student can focus on listening.

    Classroom strategies that pair well

    • •Allow typing or speech-to-text for any writing over a paragraph
    • •Provide pre-printed notes or copies from a peer
    • •Grade content separately from handwriting and mechanics
